Show Jumping, Show Riding Lesson
The emergence of equestrian sports can be traced back to warfare, when training of soldiers and horses was very important. Officially, only those disciplines are qualified as equestrian sports, which are registered at the International Equestrian Federation. Hungary joined the Federation in 1924. The disciplines of equestrian sports are the following: dressage, show-jumping, military (eventing), carriage-driving, horse-exercises, distance-riding, western competitions, orienteering in the countryside, horse archery, polo, and pentathlon.

DíjugratásThe aim of dressage is the development of the horse’s temper, movement and abilities at the same time. With the help of professional training, the muscles of the horse become relaxed, its movement becomes flexible and dynamic. As a result of the training the horse becomes calm, attentive and co-operative. At dressage tournaments, the result of training is shown and praised. The programmes of dressage range from beginner through medium- and advanced level tasks to the Olympic Grand Prix. Its program is published by the International Equestrian Federation. Tasks are evaluated on a 0-10 point scale and results are calculated based on the points.

Show-jumping competitions put the horse’s jumping abilities, skills and the rider’s knowledge to the test amongst different conditions. Competitors are sanctioned by faults for their mistakes. The winner is the competitor, who gets the least faults and can fulfil tasks in the shortest time. The show-jumping competition at the Olympic Games is the most prestigious show-jumping tournament.

The first show-jumping competitions were held in London, Dublin, Vienna and Paris in the 19th century. At first, only the style of the horses was evaluated, later their jumping ability was also an important aspect. Show-jumping was accepted as an Olympic sport in 1912. At the beginning it was not uniformly controlled. It was the first equestrian sport which was considered to be a professional sport. The introduction of the world cup in 1979 gave big boost to the popularity of show-jumping. The seasonality of the sport came to an end by taking the events into sport halls.
